ENGLAND'S Barmy Army socked it to a jobsworth security guard after he told a fan to put his shoe back on.

Hundreds of travelling supporters whipped off footwear and waved it above their head.

The quick response was just as impressive as their England team's at the MCG.

Joe Root's men had been outplayed in losing the Ashes by surrendering the first Three Tests Down Under.

But two of the men most under fire, paceman Stuart Broad and opening batsman Alastair Cook, have led the charge back in the fourth encounter.

Broad's 4-51 sparked Australia's first-innings slump from 260-4 to 327 all out.

Then former skipper Cook hit 104 not out as Root's unbeaten 49 helped England to 192-2 after two days.

The Barmy Army, too, put their heart and sole into their efforts as they mocked the security guard's over-zealous action on footwear.

And the tourists' famous funseekers roared on England's best day day of the tour so far.

But they saved their best moment for when they each showed off a shoe to the rest of the stadium.

The Barmy Army were quick to post the moment on their Twitter account - perhaps as a warning "footnote" to security staff in the future.

Meanwhile, Aussie support faded away as their team struggled to tame Cook on a slow pitch.

Now England must hope they can bring the home side to heel over the last three days to transform the mood of this tour with a rare victory Down Under.
