Mikel Arteta's side may face a battle on their hands if they are to land the 21-year-old midfielder with Liverpool also keen to secure the services of the talented Frenchman.

The Gunners are thought to be tempted to make a bid for the player who is rated at £65million.

It should come as no surprise that Aouar is hot property with big name backers like Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola and Real Madrid star Benzema.

Guardiola has publicly expressed his appreciation for Aouar's talents - even waiting to speak to him in the tunnel last season after City's Champions League clash with Lyon.

At the time ex Barcelona boss Guardiola said: "Houssem is a very good player. He is incredible.

"He is excellent. He is always very calm with the ball at his feet, with an excellent technical quality."

The French under-21 ace has also been shown love by compatriot Benzema.

'HE CAN GO FAR'

Speaking in 2018 - as cited by the - Benzema predicted where Aouar's natural ability could take him.

He said: "Aouar? He is the new star of Lyon and the next generation of the club.

"His beautiful season only confirms what I said about him. He is a very good player.

"I know him, I really like the player. He can go far."

Aouar made his bow in the Lyon first-team back in 2017 and has since made 97 league appearances.

In that time he has netted 16 goals and caught the eye of Europe's top clubs.

Despite Guardiola's clear admiration for Aouar, City's hopes of signing him hang in the balance as they await the outcome of their appeal over a Champions League ban for next season.
