Roy Hodgson's men are now looking to win their first tournament in 50 years since the famous 1966 World Cup triumph.

But to do so they must be quick out the blocks against Russia and get a firm foothold in Group B.

Leonid Slutsky's side have been crippled by injury and have an ageing defence which the likes of Harry Kane, Raheem Sterling and Dele Alli can punish with pace.

A win would but Roy's boys in the driving seat and set them up perfectly for the Home Nations crunch clash with the Dragons on Thursday.

But England have NEVER won an opening game of a European tournament since.

Can they break the deadlock tonight?

Find out as GAVIN NEWSHAM leads you through all the action.

Enjoy!

9.59 - So that's all from me tonight. Difficult result to take for England after such an encouraging display but there a lot of positives to take away from the game so Roy's boys shouldn't be too downhearted. Beat Wales and it's back on. Thanks for joining for me. I'll be back tomorrow as Northern Ireland begin their campaign against Poland at 5pm. Enjoy the rest of your evening. Goodnight!

9.53 - So England still haven't won the opening game of a European Championship finals but they really should have been home and hosed by half-time in this one. They outclassed Russia in virtually every department but were undone by some sloppy defending right at the death. It's two points dropped, though, and it makes that game against Wales on Thursday even more important now.

FT: ENGLAND 1 RUSSIA 1

9.49 - And that's it. All over. England are denied by an injury-time equaliser and that draw will feel like a defeat, especially after a game which they dominated so comprehensively.

9.47 - Vasili Berezutski appears from nowhere to head a looping header into the far corner. How did that happen? Really? That is cruel. Too too cruel. ENGLAND 1 RUSSIA 1

GOOOOOAAAAALLLLL!!!

Oh dear...

9.45 - Three added minutes...

9.41 - Final change for Russia with Mamaev replacing Smolov. England make one too with James Milner coming on for Raheem Sterling.

9.39 - Another free-kick for England and this time Harry Kane barges Eric Dier off the ball and has a go himself but it's always over. Leave it to Eric.

9.37 - Jack Wilshere is looking pretty tidy so far. He brings something different to the party.

9.35 - Another change for the Russians and it's Glushakov coming on for Neustädter.

9.31 - Here's a Russian change as Gloving makes way for Shirokov. There's an England change too and it's Wayne Rooney leaving and Jack Wilshere coming on. Interesting.

9.29 - It's not Kane or Rooney that takes the free-kick, it's ERIC DIER who lashes a sumptuous drive into the top corner from the free-kick. It's no more than England deserve. Get in! ENGLAND 1 RUSSIA 0

GOOOOOOOAAAAAALLLLLLLLLL!!!!

9.27 - BOOKING! Georgy Schennikov goes in the book for a goal on Dele Alli. From the free-kick on the edge of the box something rather nice happens. Have a guess?

9.26 - What a save from Akinfeev! The ball breaks for Wayne Rooney on the edge of the box and his rasping drive is tipped brilliantly on to the bar by the Russian keeper. Adam Lallana follows up and hits the post but he's offside when the ball falls for him. Is it going to be one of those nights?

9.23 - Still no changes from either side. Who's going to blink first?

9.19 - Russia are creeping back into this and Joe Hart is scrambling across his goal just to make sure that Smolov's cheeky curler is missing the mark. This is Russia's best spell, no doubt.

9.17 - BOOKING! Gary Cahill goes in the book for a clumsy challenge on Dzyuba as the Russian threatens to break away. He'll have to be careful now.

9.14 - Another worrying Eric Dier moment there as he heads a Russian corner straight back to his own goal, forcing Joe Hart to tip it over the top. Wish he'd do that down the other end.

9.08 - This is interesting. England have a free-kick on the byline just on the edge of the area. Again, Harry Kane is taking it. No idea why. He drives it low and hard across the six-yard box but again there's nobody there to apply the finishing touch. Moments later, Kane wins another free-kick, 20 yards out, slightly to the right. Would suit a left-footer but it looks like Wayne Rooney. Nope, he goes for the near post but it's just over the top.

9.03 - Russia have started the second half much better and it takes a last-gasp tackle from Gary Cahill to deny Dzyuba as he closes in in the six-yard box. England need to pick things up.

9.00 - Russia to kick off. And WE'RE OFF AGAIN!!!

8.58 - The players are back out in Marseille. England have worked their socks off so far but they have to keep it up as this Russia side are there for the taking.

8.55 - Lack of goals aside, that was about as good as England have been under Roy Hodgson. They had pace and invention going forward and with a bit more luck they could have been out of sight already. But we need a goal and quick because it's hard to see Russia playing quite so poorly in the second half.

HT: ENGLAND 0 RUSSIA 0

How do you think we feel mate?

How do you think we feel mate?

8.42 - It's another peach of a cross in from Danny Rose that sees Raheem Sterling set to score until Akinfeev intervenes, diving in to punch it clear.

8.40 - Five minutes till the interval. England could do with the goal they clearly deserve for their dominance to date.

8.34 - Another mesmeric piece of skill from Dele Alli down by the corner flag as he wiggles though three Russian players and tees up Wayne Rooney for a fiercely hit volley. It's straight at Akinfeev again but it's coming I tell you...

8.33 - Harry Kane's just overhit another corner. I wouldn't mind it so much if he could take a decent one but...

8.28 - England have the ball in the net but Harry Kane's just offside by about five yards when he receives Lallana's pass. He still buries it though. Well you would, wouldn't you?

8.26 - Close to 70% possession for Roy's Boys so far. They're dominating this game, no doubt, but they need to find that breakthrough.

8.24 - And England are through again but as Raheem Sterling shapes to shoot it's Smolnikov who slides in and  saves the day. England are going to score in the next 1o minutes. There, I've said it.

8.22 - Delightful move from England as the surging Kyle Walker slips in Adam Lallana but he drags his right-foot shot wide of the far post. Got to hit the target there. Jamie Vardy would have buried that.

8.17 - Talking of whom, Shatov has just whipped a free-kick in from the right that Ignashevich got his head on, forcing Joe Hart into action. That was a little too easy. Meanwhile, Sterling and Rose combine brilliantly at the other end with the Spurs man slipping a lovely cross over the goalmouth. Shame there's nobody like, say, Jamie Vardy there to tap it home.

8.16 - I like the way Clive Tyldesley pronounces Shatov as 'Shar-tov'. Just say it Clive. We won't laugh. Much.

8.14 - Plenty of attacking intent from England here as Wayne Rooney's delicious crossfield pass finds Harry Kane but his right-foot shot from distance is a little too high and marginally wide. There's a goal coming, you watch.

8.12 - BOOM! Thumping header from Chris Smalling that's as meaty as they come but it's straight at Akinfeev. Either side of the Russian keeper and it's a goal.

8.09 - CLOSE! Raheem Sterling's cross is headed goalwards from Dele Alli and there's the lunging Harry Kane at the back post but he's inches away from applying the killer touch. Good stuff from England.

8.06 - Russia are growing into this now and they're getting some joy down their right. Down the other end, it's Adam Lallana who takes the ball off Kyle Walker and lashes a shot straight at Akinfeev. It's a fierce drive but it's well tipped over. Quite why Harry Kane is still taking corners though is just baffling. Why doesn't Rooney take them? Never understood that one. And never will.

8.03 - England enjoying the lion's share of the possession and here's Dele Alli who latches on to the dropping ball and volleys wide from 20 yards. This is a solid start from the lads.

8.00 - OK, deep breath. Focus. Get your head in the game. We are all set. Signor Rizzoli, if you please... ENGLAND ARE OFF AND RUNNING AT EURO 2016!!!

7.57 - And here's God Save the Queen. Not sure Dele Alli knows all the words but a decent effort all round. Come on!!!

7.55 - Here's the Russian anthem. Got a soft spot for this. It's one of the more stirring anthems out there, unlike ours which is a bit of a dirge, isn't it?

7.53 - The teams are in the tunnel and Joe Hart is shouting his head (and shoulders) off. Here they come...

7.51 - Full your boots Harry lad! Russia have only kept two clean sheets in their last 15 games at European Championship finals.

7.50 - Ten minutes till England's Euro 2016 campaign gets under way. How are the nerves? My advice? Get a stiff drink, perch yourself on the edge of the sofa and cross everything you've got. Come on England!

7.41 - FACT ME! Excluding penalty shoot-outs, England are unbeaten in 22 European Championship games - since a 3-2 qualifying defeat by Croatia in November 2007.

7.34 - Not sure Andy Carroll and Mark Noble signed that one off...

7.32 - The England team are on the pitch and warming up. Is this going to be the game and the tournament where England finally click? One can but hope...

7.27 - I wonder how Jamie Vardy's feeling. Personally, I feel sorry for him after he was played hopelessly out of position against Portugal and gave Roy Hodgson the perfect reason/excuse to leave him on the bench this evening. Sure he'll feature at some stage but what if he comes on changes the game? Then what?

7.22 - Your referee this evening is the Italian Nicola Rizzoli. And get this. He dished out ten red cards in the season just gone. Got that Dele?

7.19 - What? In his pants? With a 3 litre bottle of Diamond White and a tube of Pringles? Doubt it...

Roy's just running through a few final tactics...

7.07 - So the pressure is very much on England now as they try and emulate Wales's win. What do you make of  Roy Hodgson's team line-up? Impressed? Nonplussed?

6.45 - England team: Hart, Walker, Smalling, Cahill, Rose, Rooney, Dier, Alli, Lallana, Kane, Sterling.

6.42 - Russia team: Akinfeev, Schennikov, Berezutski, Ignashevich, Smolnikov, Neustädter, Golovin, Smolov, Shatov, Kokorin, Dzyuba.

6.38 - Roy's boys have already arrived at the Stade Velodrome, Marseille, in the team bus. Three Lions' lineup will be announced soon.

6.33 - Hello and welcome to SunSport's coverage of the hotly anticipated England game. I'm Toby Gannon and I'll be bringing you live updates up until 7pm, when Gavin Newsham will take over.
