The host nation's 2-1 victory over Republic of Ireland has set up a mouthwatering last eight clash if England come through in Nice.

But Rooney says that match has to be the last thing on England's mind as they prepare to play their first match of the knock-out stages against the Nordic minnows.

Rooney said: "I don’t want to speak about France in the quarters. We have to win to get to that stage.

"Hopefully we can win against Iceland, but until then there’s no point me speaking about France because we have to get there first.

"We respect them, the size of the country is a number. They have the same amount of players on the pitch as we do.

"We hope we can go out there on win, we have to play our game and not worry about what they are going to do."

The Icelandics have been upset at the belief England are happier to face them rather than Portugal - even though they finished above Cristiano Ronaldo's side in the group stages.

But Rooney promised there is no complacency in the England camp that would lead them to underestimate the challenge ahead.

He added: "For me this is no different, Portugal or Iceland.

"The game will in every way be as difficult as if we had to face Portugal.

"We are not going into this game showing a lack of respect to Iceland.

"They will make it difficult for us to break them down and score goals, it is up to us to work out how to do that.

England's biggest problem at this tournament has been their struggles to find the net despite dominating games.

Rooney is aware he and his teammates need to be more ruthless and is convinced things will click.

He added: "You can be positive to say we have dominated the three games we played, and we haven't really done that before.

"We know if we keep getting chances we will score goals. I’m sure we will take them.

"But as the manager has made clear, it’s the knockout stage of the competition, we haven’t got any more time left to miss chances."
