Everton sign keeper Maarten Stekelenburg to re-unite the former Dutch No1 with Ronald Koeman

Toffees nab 33-year-old keeper after Tim Howard left at the end of last season for the MLS

EVERTON have bagged former Roma and Fulham goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg - to re-united the Dutchman with coach Ronald Koeman.

Stekelenburg played for Southampton last term on loan from Championship side Fulham.

The 33-year-old has 274 league appearances to his name for the Saints, Monaco, the Cottagers, Roma and Ajax.

Tim Howard left at the end of last term to join MLS club Colorado Rapids and with Spaniard Joel Robles the club's main No1 last term as the American's form dipped alarmingly.

Stekelenburg has signed a three-year deal at Everton for an undisclosed fee from Craven Cottage - given that the transfer sum to Fulham signed him for in 2013 was £4.7million - it is not going to be an eye-watering price.

Stekelenburg said: “I’m very happy - things have moved very fast over the last couple days

“He [Koeman] has come to Everton and he called me a few days after asking if I was willing to follow him. It wasn’t difficult to make that choice.

“He’s one of the best coaches - he’s straight talking, he’s fair and he has confidence in me which counts as well.

“I’ve been here [in England] for a couple of seasons and I love the Premier League. It’s fantastic that I can stay.”
