BAYERN PAY THE PENALTY

Bayern Munich 3 AC Milan 3 (3-5 on pens): German side beaten on penalties despite late equaliser from Franck Ribery

Frenchman levelled from the spot late on, but Bayern Munich were beaten on penalties

BAYERN MUNICH suffered a shoot-out defeat against AC Milan in Chicago despite Franck Ribery's late equaliser.

The German champions looked to have got out of jail when the Frenchman converted from the spot in injury-time, but Rafinha's miss in the shootout proved costly as Milan claimed victory in the International Champions Cup clash.

M'Baye Niang fired Milan into the lead in the 23rd minute on the counter-attack after he breached the Bayern Munich back line.

Franck Ribery levelled the scored six minutes later, though, with an exquisite finish from David Alaba's cross, low and hard past goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Alaba then got himself on the score-sheet as Bayern turned the match around to lead when his 20-yard shot found the bottom corner in the 38th minute.

It was a strong Bayern side that also featured Philipp Lahm, Xabi Alonso and Javi Martinez, but they weren't able to press home their advantage as Milan fought back.

Andrea Bertolacci fired in the equaliser for the Italian side four minutes after the break, and Juraj Kucka put Milan ahead just before the hour mark.

But, just when Milan looked to be home and dry, Jherson Vergara brought down Juan Bernat in the penalty area, and Ribery slotted home the spot-kick to send the match into a shoot-out.

The first seven penalties were all on target, but it was Bayern who blinked first when Rafinha missed his spot-kick, allowing Giacomo Bonaventura to step up and seal victory for Milan.
