CHELSEA are closing in on freebie goalie Marcus Bettinelli as a replacement for outgoing third-choice Willy Caballero.

Bettinelli, 29, recently left Fulham after more than a decade with the West Londoners.

Bettinelli rose through the ranks at Fulham, making 105 appearances in the process.

But in recent years, he fell behind Marek Rodak, and Alphonse Areola - who spent last season on loan at Fulham from Paris Saint-Germain taking up the No1 spot.

And so Bettinelli spent last season on loan at Championship side Middlesbrough, making 42 appearances, but Neil Warnock's team missed out on a spot in the play-offs.

But he will not have to move far after agreeing to join his old club’s neighbours at Stamford Bridge on a two-year deal.

Chelsea have been on the lookout for a new stopper since Caballero departed last month.

Bettinelli will look to compete with Kepa Arrizabalaga to be back-up to Edouard Mendy and will also boost the Blues’ homegrown contingent.

Chelsea managed to beat Dean Smith's Aston Villa to the signing of Bettinelli.

The Villans were linked with him and he would have served as back-up to Emiliano Martínez.
