Sergio Aguero given stay of execution after being charged with violent conduct and set to miss Manchester derby after elbow on Winston Reid

Argentine striker will most likely not be available for the clash against Manchester United on September 10

SERGIO AGUERO has been given a stay of execution - but is still set to miss the Manchester derby after being charged with violent conduct for elbowing Winston Reid.

The Argentine striker has been granted an extra 24 hours beyond Wednesday's 6pm deadline to respond to his charge of violent conduct.

He will most likely not be available when Pep Guardiola's side take on Manchester United on September 10.

Aguero was cited for his elbow on the West Ham defender during Manchester City's 3-1 Premier League victory over West Ham on Sunday at the Etihad.

And the Football Association took the decision on Tuesday to charge the Manchester City striker.

If Aguero's appeal is unsuccessful, he will likely face a three-match ban, meaning he would miss the matches with Manchester United, Bournemouth and Swansea in September.

A statement on the FA's website read: "Sergio Aguero has been charged for an alleged act of violent conduct which was not seen by the match officials but caught on video.

"The Manchester City forward was involved in an incident with West Ham United’s Winston Reid in the 76th minute of the game on Sunday [28 August 2016].

"He has until 6pm on Wednesday 31 August to reply.

"Off the ball incidents which are not seen at the time by the match officials are referred to a panel of three former elite match officials.

"Each panel member will review the video footage independently of one another to determine whether they consider it a sending-off offence.

"For retrospective action to be taken, and an FA charge to follow, the decision of the panel must be unanimous."
