Shelton has been left "dizzy" and unable to stand up after the cotton bud went in "too far", according to his manager Graeme Lee.

Pool's gaffer Lee revealed the injury ahead of the game, with Shelton's incident ranking among the strangest injuries suffered by sport stars.

Lee told BBC Radio Tees: "Mark's had a cotton bud in his ear that has gone in too far.

"He's gone to the hospital, sounds like the tweezers have gone in too far and he's dizzy and can't stand up."

Shelton is set to miss this afternoon's game but luckily for the 25-year-old, it's an end-of-season dead rubber.

Hartlepool sit comfortably in mid-table while Scunthorpe have already been relegated from League Two, the first time they have dropped out of the football league in 72 years.

Shelton's weird injury comes weeks after Everton boss Frank Lampard also found himself suffer an unusual issue.

He had been celebrating Alex Iwobi's crucial stoppage-time winner against Newcastle but managed to break his hand amid the jubilation.

The Chelsea legend told : "I've broken my hand in the celebrations. My bones must be going soft, I don't remember the moment.

"I didn't realise at the time but as the game carried on I was a bit sore and shaky.

"But I don't care - I'll take it for three points."
