And medics are worried he suffered a recurrence of the medial ligament injury that saw him miss two months of last season.

Coquelin, 25, will find out for sure today but could struggle to play again in 2016 if thew injury is as bad as feared.

Despite the big-money signing of Granit Xhaka, the Frenchman remains a vital cog in Arsenal's midfield.

Swiss star Xhaka, 23, came off the bench for Coquelin against Chelsea - highlighting the Emirates pecking order.

Arsene Wenger admitted the injury looked 'bad' after the midfielder left the Emirates Stadium in a knee brace on Saturday.

Coquelin will miss the Champions League clash against Basel and the weekend trip to Burnley at a minimum.

Wenger has called on his team not to rest on their laurels after beating their title rivals and record a first Champions League win of the season.

He said: "Everyone will think that Basel will be easy and then you look at the results of Basel against the English teams and you start to think it will not be easy.

"They beat Man Utd, they beat Chelsea, they beat Liverpool.

"So let's prepare properly and keep our feet on the ground because in our job, one thing I know if you are not prepared you are quickly hit on your head."

If Coquelin misses several months, Xhaka will have plenty of opportunity to prove his worth and cement a first-team place.
