Sam Allardyce sacked: Is the England manager’s job cursed following another flop?

SAM ALLARDYCE lasted just 67 days in his dream job after being caught out in a newspaper sting.

The former West Ham chief joins a long line of Three Lions bosses whose careers have taken a nosedive since taking the post.

SunSport looks at the role's checkered past since 1966 to see why Gareth Southgate should think twice about coveting the poisoned chalice.

Don Revie - 1974-77

DUBBED Don Readies because of his alleged greed. In 1977 he sold his story to a national newspaper for £20,000, saying that he was handing in his resignation for a job with the UAE — before the FA received his letter.

Revie was handed a ten-year ban from English football — later lifted on appeal.

Graham Taylor 1990-93

FAILURE to qualify for the 1994 World Cup finals cost the ex-Aston Villa boss his job but his reputation took an almighty bashing after a Channel 4 fly-on-the-wall documentary which showed him making a series of odd touchline exclamations including “Do I not like that!”.

The Sun’s mock-up of Taylor as a turnip following England’s Euro 92 exit by the Swedes was already the stuff of legend.

BROUGHT  off-field baggage with him,  which limited his reign to  two years despite making the semi-finals of Euro 96.

Was told to prove himself to earn a new deal but insisted  he did not do auditions and stepped down  to deal with five court cases.

HIS reign came to a shock end in February 1999 after he suggested   disabled people were being punished for their sins in a former life.

Refused to apologise and claimed he had been misquoted but was fired two days later.

Had already been ridiculed for bringing in faith healer Eileen Drewery.

NEWCASTLE legend managed to salvage England's Euro 2000 qualification campaign and made the tournament with a 2-1 play-off victory over Scotland.

He was criticised for tactical naivety following an exit at the hands of Portugal and resigned after a defeat to Germany in the last ever game played at Wembley in October.

Keegan returned to management with second-tier Manchester City and got them promoted and had a decent spell - including a European run - before retiring in 2005.

King Kev made a shock St James' comeback three years later but quit after falling out with Mike Ashley.

PROMISING English boss was named as Eriksson's successor - but only after No1 target 'Big Phil' Scolari turned it down.

Dubbed Second-Choice Steve after taking the job, McClaren left his role a year later as the Wally with the Brolly - hardly an improvement.

A chastening defeat in Croatia made him the only Three Lions boss not to reach a major finals other than Revie.

McClaren managed to salvage his career by leading FC Twente to the Eredivisie but failed spells at Wolfsburg, Nottingham Forest, Twente (never go back), Derby and Newcastle followed.

CRITICISED the FA on Italian TV after they stripped John Terry of the England captaincy in a race row — against his wishes.

Quit two days later after  talks with former FA chairman David Bernstein.

Had already caused  strife in the 2010 World Cup finals through his Capello Index ranking of players’ performances. England were knocked out 4-1 by Germany.

PRESIDING over England's most humiliating defeat since losing to the USA in 1950 aside, Hodgson had his fair share of troubles.

Probably his most infamous blunder was telling his team to "feed the monkey" during a half-time team talk when telling his team to pass to Andros Townsend.

The story was leaked to The Sun from within the dressing room and the boss himself was responsible for letting things slip.

Hodgson told fans on the tube that Rio Ferdinand was "finished for England" in 2012 in a PR nightmare.

He also struggled to deal with the John Terry race row as well as speculation linking the skipper with a return.

The veteran was also blasted for accepting a free watch from Hublot - who his son worked for - despite not breaking any rules.
