But Arteta took that trend to a new level yesterday as the rest of the City backroom leapt to their feet in joy.

Theo Walcott gave the the Gunners the lead before Leroy Sane levelled and England winger Sterling clinched it.

Furious Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger claimed refs were a "protected" species in a moan that claimed both City goals were offside.

Arteta made his final Arsenal appearance in May and left the pitch in tears as he was given a standing ovation from fans.

He penned an open letter following his departure.

It read: "I've enjoyed an amazing five years at Arsenal and it's been an honour and a privilege to captain such a great club.

"The opportunity to join Pep Guardiola and his team was an amazing opportunity for me and I am incredibly excited for the future."
