German midfielder writes: “Hi guys! I’m doing well and today’s surgery went fine. Now it’s another road to recovery.”

Ilkay Gundogan has updated fans on Instagram following surgery on his knee.

The German midfielder was suffered a cruciate ligament injury in Man City's 2-0 win over Watford and will be out until at least the end of the season.

But he was finally able to share some encouraging news, confirming that his operation had been successful.

He captioned the photo from his hospital bed: "Hi guys! I'm doing well and today's surgery went fine. Now it's another road to recovery 🙏#ComebackStronger."

Man City performed a much-maligned tribute to Gundogan before their match against Arsenal, with all the team's starting XI wearing replicas of his number 8 shirt.

Even the player himself seemed to think his teammates had gone slightly over the top as he jokingly tweeted to confirm he was still alive.

He wrote: "Thanks to my teammates 👏👏🏽 & of course - congrats to my boys to this crucial win against #AFC👍 PS: Don't worry - I'm still alive 😉 #MCIARS"

Gundogan has been one of City's standout performers this season but so far Pep Guardiola's side have coped well in his absence.

As well as the former Dortmund man, they missed Fernandinho and Sergio Aguero through suspension but still managed to see out the game against Watford and overcome Arsenal with an impressive second half display.

Leroy Sane and Raheem Sterling got on a scoresheet in as City came from behind to win 2-1, enjoying total domination of the ball after half time.

That win moved them above the Gunners and within seven points of leaders Chelsea ahead of a Boxing Day match against Hull that they will be expected to win.

Man City's task was made much easier by an anonymous display from Mesut Ozil at the Etihad, but Arsene Wenger denied accusations that his midfielder is lazy.
