But , Ronald Koeman's side will return with an improved £22m bid and remain confident that a deal can be completed.

Schneiderlin played under Koeman during the duo's time at Southampton and now the 27-year-old wants to reunite with his former boss.

Mourinho has failed to select Schneiderlin in his last eight league matchday squads and has made just three starts in all competitions this campaign - with just 11 minutes of action in the league.

And he may not be the only Red Devil heading to Goodison.

Memphis Depay, who is another to be shown the exit door this month, could also join Koeman's ranks.

The serious injury to Yannick Bolasie has forced the Everton boss to find a new wide man in January and eyes Depay as the ideal signing.

But United only want to let the Dutchman leave on a permanent deal as Nice also remain a potential destination.

Schneiderlin could be Everton's second signing of the window following the £11m addition of Ademola Lookman.
