Manchester United legend Paul Scholes reveals Toni Kroos was his favourite player and he even tried to base his game on German maestro

Red Devils legend Scholes reveals his admiration for Real Madrid midfielder and says he'd like to see him at Old Trafford

FORMER Manchester United star Paul Scholes has admitted he tried to base his game on Real Madrid's Toni Kroos in the later stages of his career.

Having won 25 trophies at United over the course of an illustrious career, the 42 year old has reserved high praise for a man who very nearly became his midfield successor at the theatre of dreams.

Speaking to German magazine Kicker, Scholes said "Kroos is the best midfield passer in the world. Towards the end of my career, I tried to emulate him."

Following Scholes' retirement in 2013 after 499 appearances under Sir Alex Ferguson, incoming United manager David Moyes tried and failed to bring Kroos to England.

In fact, Moyes claims a deal was in place before Kroos opted to leave Bayern Munich for the Santiago Bernabéu instead.

The 27 year old has since gone on to win a pair of Champions League titles with the Spanish giants, becoming the only German to lift the trophy with two clubs.

Kroos has also enjoyed success at an international level, winning the 2014 World Cup with Germany whilst earning a spot in the Fifa team of the tournament.

Although Scholes did earn 66 England caps, he never managed to progress further than the quarter-final stages of a major international tournament.

Scholes also thinks Kroos would fit well in the current Manchester United set up, claiming he would be "a perfect fit alongside (Ander) Herrera and (Paul) Pogba at Manchester United."

Unfortunately for Scholes, he may have to wait a little while to see his dream become a reality, as Kroos currently has five years remaining on his contract.
