BAYERN MUNICH have confirmed club legend Willy Sagnol will replace sacked Carlo Ancelotti on an interim basis until the end of the season.

Ancelotti was given the boot on Thursday following the club's 3-0 hammering at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.

Sagnol is expected to take control until the end of the current season, with 30-year-old Hoffenheim boss Julian Nagelsmann on the club's radar for next year.

The former France defender, 40, was announced as Ancelotti's No2 this summer, having spent nearly a decade at the club as a player.

Sagnol played 184 times in the Bundesliga for the German giants, while picking up 58 caps for France.

Prior to linking up with Ancelotti at Bayern, Sagnol was manager at the France Under-21 set-up and Ligue 1 side Bordeaux.

Bayern looked in trouble this summer, as they lost to Arsenal, AC Milan, Inter Milan, Liverpool and Napoli in pre-season.

However, that form has leaked into the season proper, as Ancelotti has paid the price for the club's failings, in just his second season in Germany.

Despite four wins from their first six Bundesliga games, they slipped to a 2-0 defeat to fellow title-chasers Hoffenheim and most recently drew 1-1 with Wolfsburg.

In Europe, they followed their 3-0 win over Anderlecht - who were also thumped 3-0 by Celtic this week - with the big loss at the hands of PSG.

Following the defeat, Arjen Robben all but confirmed he would NOT get behind Ancelotti.

Having been asked if he would back the Italian, Robben claimed: "I will not answer that. It was a painful defeat, we can talk about this.

"When it is a game as big as this, you never want to lose.

"I'm now in my ninth season with Bayern, this is something I am not accustomed to. But it's part of football."

Ancelotti was sacked just hours later.
