POLES APART

Crystal Palace supporter in hilarious misunderstanding with Polish fans over Selhurst Park redevelopment

Some Crystal Palace fans were poles apart after plans for the £100million transformation of Selhurst Park were revealed

SOME Crystal Palace fans were poles apart after plans for the £100million transformation of Selhurst Park were revealed.

Twitter was awash with references to the poles - or Poles - that currently blot the landscape looking out from the Arthur Wait Stand.

And that led to some obvious - but very funny confusion.

One Palace fan tweeted: "We have £100m to spend on a New Main Stand but they still can’t get rid of the f***ing poles in the Arthur.

That tweet was misconstrued by a Palace fan group in Poland, and 'Declan' was forced to clear things up.

He tweeted: "The beams that hold the stand up... They are poles that support the roof."

The Polish fan group took it all in good humour, laughing and saying: "sorry mate. Greetings from Poland".

Declan responded: "no worries mate it's all good. You're always welcome at Palace."

NEW ERA Palace to upgrade Selhurst Park with new grandstand

Anyway, after a number of posts the situation seemed to sort itself out.

There was reference at the launch that suggested sight lines in the Arthur Wait Stand will be improved - with the removal of a TV gantry.

But there is no ruling on the annoying poles just yet and maybe they'll go once the main stand has been re-developed.

Palace are staying put at Selhurst Park.

Plans, to be submitted Croydon Council in January, show the ground being expanded from a 26,000 to a 34,000 capacity stadium.

Building work is excepted to begin within the next 12 months, should plans be accepted.

The project is estimated to cost between £75m-£100m, according to chairman Steve Parish.

The new stadium will boast a five-storey stand, with a glass front, to pay homage to the original Crystal Palace built on Sydenham Hill.

Selhurst Park has long been famed for being one of the most raucous in English football.

Parish claims the stadium is helping to create “a new Crystal Palace for a new era.”

Parish also empathised the point of making sure the new ground both represented the club’s heritage and on ensuring the atmosphere is maintained.

Parish said“We need a stadium that reflects who we are, how far we have come and where we want to go.

"A home worthy of our incredible support and unique atmosphere and this great Premier League we represent.

"Today I am proud, in conjunction with our partners KSS, to introduce a new Selhurst Park with a new Crystal Palace for a new era.

"We are creating a new home worthy of our Club, our supporters and our community, and a celebration of our 112 years in South London.”
