WIGAN are up to third in the Championship table after edging out Bristol City at the DW Stadium to win 1-0.

Nick Powell netted the only goal of the game in the 52nd minute, in what is already his fourth strike of the campaign.

The ex-Manchester United midfielder got on the end of a Josh Windass delivery to guide his header into the bottom right corner.

Paul Cook's side have now won back-to-back matches, as they close the gap on table-toppers Leeds to just two points.

And after winning four games in a row, the Robins have now lost their last two fixtures, as Wigan leapfrogged them in table.

It was a tight affair at the DW, with neither side offering much in the opening 45 minutes.

But the home side came out the blocks at the start of the second period, with Windass almost breaking the deadlock, but he failed to keep his header down.

And just four minutes later they took the lead through the former Crewe ace, as he headed the ball into ground, as Niki Maenpaa helplessly watched the ball trickle into the net.

Bristol almost equalised in dramatic fashion in the 95th minute, but Famara Diedhiou's free header was easily saved by Christian Walton.

Wigan face Norwich at Carrow Road in their next outing, while Lee Johnson's men welcome Aston Villa to Ashton Gate.
