While Tottenham were reportedly eyeing up a summer switch for the Dutch international should they lose Christian Eriksen to Real Madrid.
The youngster broke into Ajax's first team during the 2016/17 season - establishing himself as one of the most gifted players in Euope.
De Jong has become the second player to sign for Barca this week, after the Spanish club brought Kevin Prince-Boateng in on loan until the end of the season.
And Ernesto Valverde's side also loaned Jeison Murillo from Valencia, with the table-toppers suffering from a mini injury crisis in defence.
