Speaking to the about his travel nightmare, Barnes has claimed his initial flight from Santorini to Madrid was cancelled - forcing him to fly to Athens before heading to Barcelona.

He was then going to hop onto the train to make his way down to the Spanish capital, but when he got to the station it was closed.

Barnes said: "I was with my family in Santorini, I had to be here at 8:30am on Thursday morning.

"I got to  at 2am, I had to get a train to Madrid, it was not until 5am, the train station is not open until 4am.

"From 2am until 4am I was lying on the floor outside the train station with a lot of homeless people before the train station opened. That’s how committed I was to getting here.”

He then took a cheeky swipe at Reds legend Ian Rush, as he added: "I am not going to mention any names, about other divas who played for Liverpool, my former teammates who would have wanted to be in a five star hotel.

“I slept on the floor of the train station for three hours, that is how much of a fan I am.

"I am not going to say who wouldn’t have done it… Ian Rush… But apart from that, that is my commitment to the cause."

Barnes - who banged in 108 goals in 407 games for Liverpool between 1987-1997 - then made up for lost time when he partied with supporters at the fan park.

He started off with his legendary Anfield rap, before switching seamlessly into his own rendition of Sugerhill Gang's hit Rapper's Delight.
