Chelsea players ‘want Frank Lampard to replace Maurizio Sarri’ but chiefs fear move is too risky

CHELSEA'S players reportedly want club legend Frank Lampard to replace Maurizio Sarri - but the board fears he's not ready for the job.

The Italian is set to join Juventus after just one season at Stamford Bridge.

And as the race hots up to take over the Blues, Bleacher Report claims Derby chief Lampard is the dressing-room favourite.

But Chelsea directors are less sure about bringing the iconic former midfielder back.

Lampard, 40, has just one season of experience in the dugout under his belt.

And despite his run to the Championship play-offs final with Derby, the feeling within the club is that the dream job has come too soon.

Allegri, who Sarri is set to replace at Juventus, is another leading contender for the role.

While Nice chief Patrick Vieira, Ajax boss Erik ten Hag and Atletico Madrid's Diego Simeone have also been touted.

Whoever takes up the reins will have to work with a two-window transfer ban hanging over their heads.

And they will also have the unenviable task of replacing Eden Hazard after his £130million Real Madrid shift.

Chelsea do have plenty of loan players returning to the club who could make an instant impact.

And Christian Pulisic will arrive this summer to complete his switch from Borussia Dortmund.

There are hopes the Blues could appeal against their ban and be allowed to spend their Hazard windfall in January.
