Fantasy football: The most criminally OVERPICKED player this season… revealed

Not everybody can be a fantasy football hero.

Harry Kane has been a class above the rest so far this season, with the likes of Mohamed Salah and Romelu Lukaku trying desperately to cling onto his coat tails.

Have you signed up to play Dream Team Weekender?

  • Pick 7 players - no limit to the number of players you can choose from one club
  • No transfer budget - any player is available to pick
  • Only Saturday and Sunday fixtures

But that's enough about the top end of the Dream Team player charts.

What about those at the other end of the scale? What about the fantasy football wooden spoons?

While the likes of Kevin Wimmer (-10) and Glen Johnson (-5) are the lowest points scorers, one player really has let the side down.

Nearly 100,000 of you, to be precise.

Leighton Baines was once regarded as one of the most consistent defenders in Premier League football and emerged from Ashley Cole's shadow to become England's first choice left back.

But how the mighty fall.

Baines is still a regular starter for Everton and has been complicit in the Toffees' terrible start to the season which sees them lingering in the relegation zone after nine games.

And the 32-year-old's Dream Team statistics reflect his struggles.

Why has Baines been so bad?

  • Picked by 11.1% of Dream Team managers
  • Has only 4 points this season
  • Averages just 0.3 points per game
  • Everton currently in the Premier League relegation zone

Baines has been selected by a sizeable 11.1% of managers but has a total of just four points from his 13 games, including a damaging Game Week total of -4 so far after that 5-2 drubbing by Arsenal on Sunday.

That means he averages just 0.3 points per appearance this season; one of the lowest returns for regular starters.

To put Baines' popularity in some context, he's been picked by more Dream Team managers than Eden Hazard, Marcus Rashford and Leroy Sane.

Everton players in general have been some of the biggest let downs, with Jordon Pickford (13 points) and Michael Keane (19 points) both struggling to repay the faith instilled in them.

Our advice?

If you're one of the poor souls stuck with Baines, look at similar priced alternatives like Ahmed Hegazi (£1.9m), Chris Lowe (£2.3m) and Charlie Daniels (£2.4m) when your transfers become available.
