A serious injury to veteran German centre half Per Mertesacker has forced Arsene Wenger to search for a new centre half.

But according to reports in Spain, Valencia are holding out for €25-30m more for their key back marker. Mustafi was once a young Everton prospect and is apparatently very keen on a move to the Premier League.

Not to mention the idea of playing Champions League football.

Arriving in England ahead of his club’s friendly matches with Bournemouth and Crystal Palace, he was reportedly stopped by an customs officials and jokingly told him: “Sign for Arsenal or else you aren’t coming through.”

Mustafi confirmed yesterday that he was back in training – so perhaps the officer got his wish?

Arsenal may consider instead a cut-price move for Mexican centre-half Hector Moreno. The PSV Eindhoven star was on Wenger’s radar two years ago before he broke a leg while playing at the 2014 World Cup. And he would only cost around £7.5m.

Moreno, 28, cost PSV £4m when he signed from Spanish club Espanyol last summer. And the Dutch champions are resigned to losing the experienced stopper, with Everton and Swansea also interested.

Fabian Schar of Hoffenheim and Roma’s Kostas Manolas are also under scrutiny.
