HAPPY DAYS

Aidan O’Brien saddles a 1-2-3 in the Moyglare while Caravaggio bounced back to winning ways on Irish Champions Weekend at The Curragh

Happily went off relatively unfancied at odds of 13-2 but she got up in the final strides to beat stablemate Magical with September home in third place

Happily

HAPPILY got up in the final stride to beat stablemate Magical to victory in the Moyglare Stud Stakes at the Curragh.

Trainer Aidan O'Brien saddled the first three home as September ran on for third.

But it was Happily who stole the headlines as she found top gear late on under the trainer's son Donnacha and got up to win by a short-head.

O'Brien said: "Happily toughed it out and Ryan's filly (Magical) ran a stormer as well.

"Donnacha gave her a great ride. He was delighted to be on Happily. In all fairness, they never question anything and that was just the way it happened."

Earlier on the card, O'Brien's Caravaggio got back to winning ways in the Derrinstown Stud Flying Five Stakes.

He was another who hit top gear late in the race as he comfortably got up to beat stablemate Alphabet.

O'Brien said: "I'm delighted. We wanted to come back here and get the confidence back. He did everything perfect and Ryan gave him a lovely ride.

"We think he's a great horse. He's relaxed, he quickens, he travels.

"We put the wrong shoes on him the last day and he had no traction in Deauville. He just kept swapping and changing and he just never got into any kind of a gear. It was like driving a car with the clutch slipping.

"It was a very good performance in heavy ground today. He has all the options. He obviously has the sprint at Ascot and also America.

"We were talking about Australia earlier in the year, but it might be too much as we had to do a little bit with him the last two weeks to get him here and get everything working."

Also on the card, Gordon Elliott's Beckford was beaten in the National Stakes by Jim Bolger's Verbal Dexterity after O'Brien's Gustav Klimt was a non-runner earlier in the morning.

Bolger said: "He's a very good horse. We loved him here the first day and then I got it wrong when I went back to six furlongs in the Railway.

"He needs the seven (furlongs), even though he has plenty of toe. Seven or a mile is his real cut.

"I can see him as being champion European two-year-old. He's the real deal. He's as good as any of the two-year-olds I've had."

Order Of St George powered home in the Irish St Leger to give O'Brien yet another Group 1 win.

O'Brien's stayer was sent to the front rounding the home turn and it was a move his opponents were unable to match, with him galloping on relentlessly to score by nine lengths.

Torcedor was best of the rest in second, while Mount Moriah beat Wicklow Brave to third place.
