Defoe is not certain to run in the Tattersalls Gold Cup

SATURDAY’S ITV RACES

1.50 NEWMARKET

EXAMINER has an each-way shout at a big price in this tough contest. He impressed when battling to win on his comeback here over a mile and this longer trip has suited well in the past.

He was far from disgraced in the Cambridgeshire here last season and is just 3lb higher today. Breden is another who could run better his price suggests after being an unlucky third at Lingfield last time.

2.05 GOODWOOD

MORI has had a wind operation since a couple of disappointing runs last season and she enjoyed herself on her last visit to this tricky track when winning a Listed race over 1m2f.

She stepped up on that with a close second in the Group 2 Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot so should be more than good enough for this.

Architecture ran some good races in defeat last season and she was placed in the Epsom and Irish Oaks as a three-year-old so has class.

2.20 NEWMARKET

MABS CROSS was unlucky not to win on her comeback from six months off at Bath last time, being hampered a couple of times as the race hotted up.

It was an excellent effort to finish second in that Listed race and she looks ready for this step up in class.

Havana Grey is already proven at this level and went close in a Deauville Group 1 last season. This trip suits and he’ll be a threat if wound up after eight months off.

2.40 GOODWOOD

DONNCHA keeps shaping as though a win is coming and a return to one of his favourite tracks could do the trick. He was asked to come form a long way back at Newmarket last time when finishing fourth and these conditions are ideal.

The handicapper has dropped him another 2lb which should help too.

2.55 NEWMARKET

It’s hard to see anything laying a glove on DEFOE after he cruised to victory in the Group 3 John Porter Stakes last time. He relishes this trip and looks the type who could improve on his already strong form as a four-year-old.

Khalidi could be best of the rest after finding a Meydan Group 1 a bit beyond him last time. He went close in the King Edward VII Stakes at his best last season which is strong form.

3.35 NEWMARKET

Aidan O’Brien can train the first two home in the 2,000 Guineas — but it’s a toss-up which one of Gustav Klimt or SAXON WARRIOR will pass the post first.

The latter is favourite for the Derby and is bred to appreciate further than this but he showed great heart to win the Racing Post Trophy over this trip last season.

Gustav Klimt came back from a long break to win well at Leopardstown latest but he’s less than half the price of his stablemate.

Elarqam looks the pick of the home team for Mark Johnston. He won the Tattersall Stakes here well last time out in September and, being a son of Frankel, is suited to this mile.

Headway looks a big price and could just sneak into the frame. He won a Listed race well at Lingfield last time and did well as a two-year-old. He’s got plenty of pace but shapes as though this distance will suit.
