THERE’S a Must bet in the Strensall Stakes.

Last year’s winner MUSTASHRY looks to have a great chance of landing this race again.

He beat the smart Forest Ranger 12 months ago and his comeback win at Sandown was a nice prep for the defence of this crown.

Lord Glitters has the best form after going close when runner-up in the Queen Anne at Royal Ascot and hitting the frame in the Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood.

This is a significant drop in grade but I’m just not convinced this track will bring out the best in him.

He needs to be held up off a decent pace and he might find it hard to make enough ground up when it matters.

Threading chased home Alpha Centauri – the best miler in Europe – in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot. The problem is she’s been miles below that form in her two subsequent starts.

She’s far from certain to bring her A-game to this race but her two track wins does give her some hope.

Seniority is the interesting one. He was pulled out of a handicap here on Thursday and looks well worth a try at this grade after his smooth success in Goodwood’s valuable Golden Mile.

The runner-up Poet’s Society won that race two days ago but I’m just worried he won’t get the strong pace he likes.

GET the champagne ready for SUPERNOVA in the Sky Bet Melrose Handicap.

He was promising in novice races last season but predictably has taken big strides forward upped to 1m4f this year.

His Goodwood defeat of Soto Sizzler on his return in June looks really good form now after the winner landed a hot race returned to the same track at the Glorious meeting.

My fancy was too good for his four rivals on his handicap debut at Doncaster last month when the small field and tactical nature of the race would not have suited him.

Templegate's TV tips

1.50 York - Mutashry: 'He beat smart Forest Ranger 12 months ago and his comeback win at Sandown was a nice prep for the defence of this crown'

2.25 York - Supernova: 'His Goodwood defeat of Soto Sizzler looks really good form now after the winner landed a hot race at the Glorious meeting'

3.00 York - Expert Eye: 'The return to 7f is in his favour and he looks a banker bet'

3.40 York - Dylan Mouth: 'He arrives at York in good form having struck over today’s course and distance last month'

2.05 Goodwood - Beat The Bank: 'He looked a top prospect when winning five times last year and he’s shown smart form this season'

2.40 Goodwood - Look Around: 'Impressed when following up her Kempton novice success by making all the running in a Sandown Listed contest'

3.15 Goodwood - Chessman: 'He’s creeping up the weights but looks progressive enough to defy the handicapper'

He has the potential to improve a fair bit in a faster-run race like today’s contest.

Surprisingly Mark Johnston hasn’t got a particularly great record in this race although he did win it three years ago.

His Making Miracles was third behind Soto Sizzler at Goodwood but he will definitely like the return to 1m6f – the distance he won over at Haydock in July.

Stablemate Lucky Deal probably wants even further but at least this kind of race will bring his stamina into play.

Corgi split Soto Sizzler and Making Miracles at Goodwood. He’s got the pedigree to do well over today’s longer trip but he has got worked up before his races.

LOOK out for EXPERT EYE in the Sky Bet City Of York Stakes.

Sir Michael Stoute’s ace looks head and shoulders above this lot. He was made ante-post favourite for the 2000 Guineas after an impressive win in the Vintage Stakes at Goodwood last summer.

Things didn’t go to plan afterwards but he’s firmly back on track now.

He bolted up in the Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot and he ran another blinder in the Sussex Stakes. He couldn’t live with Lightning Spear’s late burst having got involved in the battle early enough and that is Group 1 form. The return to 7f is in his favour and he looks a banker bet.

Arbalet went close in a red-hot Ascot handicap on King George day. He’s progressing nicely but he’s come up well short when tried at this level in the past. One of those was when fifth behind Expert Eye in the Jersey.

Above The Rest could be best of the older horses. He’s hit form in some order to put in personal-best victories over today’s course and distance and at Newcastle. This is another step up but he is in great order.

Veteran Gordon Lord Byron would have had a great chance in his pomp but he’s been beaten in weaker races than this recently.

Suedois is the best of David O’Meara’s pair.

PUT your faith in Mouth almighty in the Sky Bet Ebor.

DYLAN MOUTH looks to have what it take to win this great handicap pot.

He was top-class when trained in Italy and hasn’t done at all badly since switching to Marco Botti.

Last year’s Old Newton Cup victory – when he weaved his way through from the rear – showed he is well at home in big-field handicaps.

He arrives at York in good form having struck over today’s course and distance last month. That might not have been the greatest Group 3 ever run but the race wouldn’t have really suited his style and he still won.

Stratum has been fancied for this race ever since he landed the JLT Cup over 2m at Newbury last month. That was only his second Flat start since joining Willie Mullins.

I can’t see the drop in distance being a problem and there’s little doubt he’s a big player.

Blakeney Point is another likely lad. He ended last season with a couple of 1m4f wins and his stamina is more than proven for today’s longer trip.

He looks to have been lined up for this race with nice Group 3 effort at Goodwood and he swaps his usual cheekpieces for blinkers today.

I can also see Montaly running well. He won the Group 2 Lonsdale Cup at this meeting 12 months ago and, while he’s not been in that form this season, he is an interesting contender.

Last year’s winner Nakeeta and Irish raider Sea The Lion are others in with a shout.

THE Ladbrokes Celebration Mile is money in the Bank.

Andrew Balding’s BEAT THE BANK has quite taken the step up into Group 1s and he’ll be much happier in these slightly calmer waters.

He looked a top prospect when winning five times last year and he’s shown smart form this season. My fancy was a little unlucky when sixth in the Queen Anne at Royal Ascot before returning to that track to overcome traffic problems to win a Group 2.

Things didn’t go his way in the Sussex Stakes and he will be hard to beat granted a more favourable rub of the green.

Altyn Orda has faced some stiff tasks this season. She was fifth in the 1000 Guineas and chased home superstar filly Alpha Centauri in the Falmouth at Newmarket’s July meeting.

She’s promising but whether she’s up to taking on the colts in a race like this is unclear.

I’m more worried about Zonderland. I was tempted to chance him on his course form.

He’s finished runner-up to this year’s Sussex Stakes hero Lightning Spear in this race in each of the last two years. This season has been disappointing for Clive Cox’s hope but his run at Salisbury last week was a step in the right direction.

Arod is likely to set the pace but he’s not as good as he once was and Stormy Atlantic would need plenty of rain to have much of a chance.

TAKE a good Look at the Ladbrokes Prestige Stakes.

LOOK AROUND impressed me when following up her Kempton novice success by making all the running in a Sandown Listed contest.

She doesn’t have to lead but she clearly stays this trip very well so I would imagine she would get a prominent position from her wide draw. That should help her evade any possible traffic problems Goodwood might throw up.

Antonia De Vega beat a subsequent winner from Aidan O’Brien’s powerful yard at Glorious Goodwood. That’s probably smart form but it’s never easy for a once-raced maiden winner to step into Group races.

Accordance also won at Goodwood’s big meeting. She has claims but might just need a bit further to show her very best.

Magnetic Charm bolted up at Newbury and is another smart filly with plenty of potential. She’s sure to improve for today’s extra furlong.

CHESSMAN should be the grandmaster of this hot handicap.

He came home well when fifth behind Burnt Sugar in the International Handicap at Ascot on King George day. They’re closely matched on that form but my fancy has copped the dream rails draw while Burnt Sugar has a shocker in stall 20.

Chessman also ran well on his previous start when third from a poor draw at Chester. He’s creeping up the weights but looks progressive enough to defy the handicapper.

Aljady’s unbeaten run came to an end when sixth in a big-field handicap at Glorious Goodwood. He was far from disgraced that day but his inexperience could be his downfall again.

Vale Of Kent was runner-up in that race and he returned three days later to nose to victory over today’s track and trip. He’s particularly tough and has a nice draw.

Mankib’s only defeats came in Group races. He’s on a hat-trick after wins at Newbury and Thirsk but stall 19 is a hefty obstacle to overcome.
