You should be able to get double figures for a horse that comes back just 4lb higher in the weights than when successful 12 months ago.

Iain Jardine’s star proved that was no fluke when finishing a brilliant fifth in the Melbourne Cup when he again relished this sort of stamina test. It may be that journeying across the world took it out of him as he was below par on his first two runs this term.

But he put that firmly behind him with an excellent effort in the JLT Cup at Newbury last time. He was just over three lengths behind winner Stratum there and and faces him on much better terms today.

The draw has been kind with stall 15 looking ideal and he obviously knows what it takes to win this red-hot handicap.

There aren’t many in this that you can’t make some kind of case for. Stratum is joined by stablemate Whiskey Sour and, at the prices, the latter makes more appeal.

He’s got a touch of class and doesn’t have too many miles on the clock when it comes to Flat racing. William Buick’s mount is out of the top drawer of hurdlers but has enough pace to make a splash.

Blakeney Point would come right into it if York catches a passing shower as the pick of his form has been with some cut. He has been campaigning over 1m4f with credit but has plenty of stamina to go with that speed.

Jockey Jamie Spencer is having a golden run and it will be interesting to see if the first-time blinkers help in this big field.

At a huge price, Dylan Mouth must be considered after winning the Group 3 Silver Cup here last time. That was over this distance and, although this is a very different test to that five-runner affair, he is technically dropping in class.

EXPERT EYE drops back to his best distance for the City Of York Stakes at 3.00.

The last time he tackled 7f he ran away with the Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot by more than four lengths. He then stepped into Grade 1 company for the Sussex Stakes over a mile and went well again, coming home a close second.

He’s only three so should still be improving and will have no issues with the ground.

Veteran Suedois had a slow start to the season but he’s looked his old self when finishing third in the Summer Mile at Ascot before going down in a head-bobber over this trip at Glorious Goodwood last time.

He rates a danger, while Above The Rest is another who enjoys himself here. He won a good handicap over this trip in June and dropped down to 6f for a convincing victory in the Chipchase Stakes at Newcastle last time.

This is a tougher assignment than that but he’s in the form of his life and could make his presence felt.

MAKING MIRACLES can conjure up another win in York’s Melrose Stakes (2.25).

Trainer Mark Johnston will be buzzing after breaking the record for most wins earlier in the week and can carry off another nice prize.

He ran well over 1m4f when third at Glorious Goodwood but came into his own over this distance when taking a big handicap at Haydock last month.

He’s the type of horse that keeps digging deep and that will be a real asset in this tough race.

There are few better with a stayer than trainer Hughie Morrison and his Corgi has been knocking on the door. He was ahead of Making Miracles last time and can give him most to think about again.
