CAPE OF GOOD HOPE

Today’s FREE ITV racing tips: Fontwell, Ascot, Newmarket, Redcar, Wolverhampton and Longchamp – Steve Mullen’s betting preview for the racing this Saturday, October 6

CAPE BYRON looks like poetry in motion at Ascot (3.35).

Roger Varian’s four-year-old was mightily unlucky to be beaten half a length by the excellent Ripp Orf in a big handicap here last month.

He was in the wrong group there and had to be switched a couple of times before leading his side of the track home.

The problem was that the winner had got first run and cashed in on being on the stands’ side.

Ripp Orf lines up here again and can’t be ruled out at a track that brings out the best in him, especially in a big field.

The fast pace suits both horses and it would be no surprise to see them fighting out the finish again.

A few of our old favourites can be given a chance, with George Bowen definitely among them.

He didn’t get going in the Ayr Gold Cup last time where the testing ground didn’t seem to be his favourite.

He put in some good runs before that, including when sixth in the Wokingham at the Royal meeting here.

It will be interesting to see how he fares with this extra furlong as he has enough quality to figure.

Gilgamesh keeps threatening to win a big race this season and was again right on the premises at Newmarket last time out. He’s another who ran well in the Wokingham but he’s proven over this distance and could easily run into a place.

GIRL POWER Everything you need to know about Arc favourite Enable

LIMATO has looked something like his old self in winning a couple of Listed races and can step back into Group class by taking Ascot’s 3.00.

After messing about with his trip, connections have been wisely sticking to this 6f and he had plenty in hand when scoring at York last time.

That built on another solid win at Newmarket and there’s plenty of life left in the old dog yet.

Dream of Dreams and Laugh A Minute have both been performing well in races of this class and better. They look the main threats.

I CAN FLY lived up to her name when winning a Leopardstown Group 2 last time and can step up for the Sun Chariot Stakes (3.15 Newmarket).

That was vastly improved form as she scooted away from some decent rivals to win in third gear. The one concern is that she didn’t enjoy herself when sent off favourite for the 1,000 Guineas here in May but she’s had plenty of time to mature since then and goes on any ground.

Wind Chimes is in the same ownership as the tip and went close in a hot race at Longchamp last time. She was third in the French 1,000 Guineas and should be right on the premises.

Steve Mullen's top tips for Saturday

  • 3.35 Ascot - Cape Byron
  • 3.00 Ascot - Mitchum Swagger
  • 3.15 Newmarket - I Can Fly

In tomorrow’s Arc, it looks hard to beat Enable if she runs close to the performance that won her the race 12 months ago.

That’s not certain to happen though with her well-documented problems since, even though she gave Crystal Ocean a good hiding at Kempton last time.

SEA OF CLASS looks a worthy foe and makes more appeal at the prices. She has come on in leaps and bounds with every run this season.

It was a shame that deep ground forced her out of the Oaks at Epsom because she won the Irish version handily enough. That form has already been left behind with a convincing victory in the Yorkshire Oaks last time out.

The worry with her is the ground so if the forecast good ends up softer in France, it may be better to hold your bets. But assuming the rain stays away, she should put up a mighty effort.

The pick of the home teams looks to be Waldgeist. He won the prestigious Grand Prix De Saint-Cloud in July and followed up with a Group 2 success here last month. He left his rivals well behind there and that previous course experience could be an asset.
