CHASE CAREY has been named the new Chief Executive of Formula One - ending the 40-year reign of Bernie Ecclestone in control of the glamour sport.

Carey has taken over the top job in F1 following confirmation of the Liberty Group takeover of the Formula One Group.

Who is Chase Carey?

Chase Carey is the newly appointed Chief Executive of the Formula One Group.

The American businessman has been handed the top job in F1 after Liberty Group completed their takeover of the company.

The 62-year-old had already been working as chairman of F1 but now succeeds Bernie Ecclestone in overall control, ending an almost 40-year association with the sport for the British tycoon.

Carey established his professional reputation in the United States working in television with Fox and DirecTV.

The American has been appointed by Liberty Media after the company bought the sport for £6.4billion.

The 62-year-old has been learning the ropes from Ecclestone for the past six months.

What has Chase Carey done in his career?

Carey was educated to degree Colgate University in Hamilton, New York - a private liberal arts college.

He then went on to study for a Masters of Business Administration at Harvard.

Carey first came to prominence when he worked at Fox, a holding company of News Corporation, in 1988. He spent the next decade there, going on to serve as Chief Operating Officer of Fox Inc.

Carey played a key role in helping launch the Fox Sports and Fox News channels, that have continued grow since they were established.

News Corporation went on to obtain a controlling interest in the company who owned satellite TV provider DirecTV, and in 2003 Carey was appointed as CEO of DirecTV.

When he started his role, the businessman set a goal of adding one million new subscribers - a target he had passed by the time he left his position six years later.

Carey then returned to News Corporation in 2009, taking over as President, COO and Deputy Chairman.

As the business grew and diversified, Carey continued to flourish and in 2013 he was anounced as COO of 21st Century Fox, the successor of News Corporation that owned most of the company's film and television rights.

Carey was re-assigned Executive Vice-Chairman in 2015, and last year also began work as chairman of Formula One.

What is Chase Carey planning for F1?

He wants to turn each Grand Prix into a superbowl-type event to engage more fans across the globe.

Carey wants to increase the thrill of the sport both on and off the track by looking at the rules and procedures along with what other events can be put on around races.

He also plans to increase the sport's audience by revolutionising TV deals and embracing social media use.

What else do we need to know about Chase Carey?

Carey is a big rugby fan and was part of the University rugby clubs at both Colgate and Harvard.

While attending Colgate he joined the Delta Upsilon fraternity - members of whom have gone on to win six Nobel prizes, five Olympic gold medals and four Medals of Honour.

As a proud New Yorker, he is a big fans of the Yankees baseball team, and also an avid fan of the Giants in NFL.

Carey is such a Yankees fan he has seats from side's demolished Yankee Stadium in his office.
