Rio Olympics 2016: Jason Kenny beats Callum Skinner in clash of Great Britain room-mates to win Olympic cycling sprint gold in Rio

JASON KENNY won an amazing fifth Olympic gold medal by beating Great Britain ROOM-MATE Callum Skinner in the cycling sprint final.

The pair won gold together in the team sprint on Thursday but went head to head in the individual event, with Kenny coming out on top 2-0 in the best-of-three contest to leapfrog rowing legend Steve Redgrave in the all-time GB medal rankings.

Skinner had joked that he was going to treat Kenny to a McDonald's ahead of their gold-medal clash.

And there is no doubt who the Big Macs are on tonight, after Kenny powered to victory - winning GB's 14th gold of the Games.

Kenny, the 28-year-old fiance of three-time Olympic gold medallist Laura Trott, can now make it six gold medals if he triumphs in the keirin, which starts on Tuesday,

If Trott was to also win the omnium, which begins tomorrow, then that would mean the couple have an amazing TEN gold medals between them.

Kenny said: "It is special, really special. I'm really grateful, everyone works so hard for us.

"When we win it feels like the team is winning and we have everyone behind us, pushing us.

"My confidence was knocked with that loss to Denis Dmitriev in the semi-final, but it woke me up a bit for the final."

Glaswegian Skinner added:"The whole journey has been incredible.

"I got beaten by the world champion and he had the tactics and the legs.

"The main focus has been the team sprint, so to come away with anything else was a bonus."

Six-time Olympic cycling champion Sir Chris Hoy hailed the performance of fellow Scot Skinner.

He said: "For me, Callum Skinner has been the rider of the Games.

"To come from relative obscurity and to win a gold in the team sprint and to win a silver here, you can't underestimate how good an achievement that is.

"A GB one and two is amazing. Jason had so much in the tank, phenomenal power."
