Roger Federer teams up with fellow tennis stars Tommy Haas and Grigor Dimitrov on Instagram to form boy-band ‘The Backhand Boys’

Performing with Canadian musician David Foster, it was the band's second effort after Australian Open 'NOTNSYNC' gig

FANS may have been cheated out of watching Roger Federer on the court... but they got more than they bargained for as he showed off his new band.

The Swiss ace, 35, was due to face Australian hot-head Nick Kyrgios in the quarter-final, only for the latter to pull out with suspected food poisoning.

However, ever the entertainer, Fed ensured his fans didn't go short, taking to Instagram to show off his 'boy-band' for the second-time.

Teaming up with ex-pro Tommy Haas, Bulgarian world No13 Grigor Dimitrov and Canadian musician - and Haas' father-in-law - David Foster, Federer belted out a rendition of Chicago's Hard To Say Sorry.

Amazingly, Fed called his super-group 'The Backhand Boys' having previously dubbed the quartet 'NOTNSYNC' when they performed the same tune at the Australian Open in January.

Captioning the clip on Instagram, Federer wrote: "No seriously, we're actually starting a boyband: "The one handed #BackhandBoys. We're recruiting!"

Following the clip, Fed described the performance as 'so bad, yet so good'.

Federer is now one of the favourites to win the Indian Wells tournament after Novak Djokovic was beaten in the previous round by the now-withdrawn Kyrgios.

The 21-year-old Aussie revealed in a statement: "After a restless night of being sick I have nothing left and to play a great champion like Roger, I need to be at my best to have a chance."

"I don't take this decision lightly, these are the matches we train for but I'm in no fit state to take to the court.

"I'm sorry to the fans but I have to put my health first and I hope you understand.

"I want to wish Roger the best of luck for the rest of the tournament and thank everyone for their support so far here at the BNP Paribas Open.

"I will definitely be back. Thank you."

Kyrgios is no stranger to making headlines for non-tennis reasons, having most recently suffered an on-court meltdown at the Australia Open against Andreas Seppi.

Months earlier, he was banned for abusing fans and 'giving up' during the Shanghai Open, as well as slamming Piers Morgan on social media.
