PS5 DualSense controller lets you ‘feel’ video games with revolutionary ‘haptic’ tech

SONY has now unveiled its next-gen PS5 console – but the controller has been public knowledge for months.

Earlier this year, Sony debuted its new DualSense controller.

At the time, it looked like a space-age monster – miles away from the safe PS4 design.

But it makes perfect sense now that Sony has unveiled its sci-fi PS5, with similarly futuristic looks.

Sony's DualSense gaming pad is like no other PlayStation controller.

That's because it features advanced "haptic" feedback, which lets you "feel" the game.

The term "haptic" literally means "relating to touch", and so it's about providing better touch feedback to your hands.

This replaces the rumble technology typically found in joypads.

There are more vibrating motors in your controller (including the triggers and joysticks).

It gives the DualSense what PlayStation calls "a broader range of feedback".

"Crashing into a wall in a race car feels much different than making a tackle on the football field," said PlayStation boss Jim Ryan.

"You can even get a sense for a variety of textures when running through fields of grass or plodding through mud."

The new controller will also feature adaptive triggers – technology built into the L2 and R2 trigger buttons.

Developers will be able to program the resistance of these triggers so you can feel the "tactile sensation of drawing a bow and arrow", for instance.

Game creators are already receiving early versions of the new controller.

PS5 price – how much will it cost?

Here's what you need to know...

Sony still hasn't confirmed how much the PS5 will cost.

What we do know is that there are two different models, including an all-digital edition.

This will almost certainly be cheaper, because it abandons the disc-tray (and therefore the UHD Blu-ray player).

We spoke to gadget expert Paolo Pescatore, who said the console will have a premium price, thanks to the slick new design and high performance.

"Expect a price point somewhere between £400-500 for both models," said savvy analyst Paolo, of PP Foresight, speaking to The Sun.

"Obviously the digital only version should be cheaper (maybe under £400).

He added: "Watch out for some introductory bundles at launch."

The PlayStation 5, or PS5, is Sony's next-gen console.

It's expected to launch later this year, and promises graphically intensive games that can run at 8K resolution.

The console was fully unveiled at a special event on June 11, and sports a new space-age design.

Sony is selling the console in two variants: a normal unit, and a 'digital' edition with no disc tray.
