SAMSUNG has included a concealed emergency mode that helps conserve a phone’s power and extend battery life.

There is a special technique to activate the mode - which automatically darkens the home screen.

The emergency mode enables people to extend their device’s standby time should they experience an emergency.

It's designed to conserve power for as long as possible - and until help arrives at the scene, said Samsung.

"When this mode is activated, the screen’s brightness will decrease," added.

"The home screen will be changed to a black theme to reduce battery consumption."

However, people can still use the phone app to call a and also to make emergency calls.

"You can also turn on the flash, sound alarms and send your location information to others in a message," it added.

Samsung charging tip – how to charge best

Here's Samsung's official advice...

To get the most out of your smartphone's battery, you'll need to charge it properly.

Most Smartphones have a lithium-ion battery that lives longer when charged regularly.

Unlike the nickel batteries used in older phones, lithium-ion batteries do best when kept above a 50 percent charge.

Repeatedly allowing the battery to drain fully may shorten its life and decrease its overall capacity.

If this happens, you'll need to charge the battery more frequently and it may last only a few hours before needing a charge, for example.

Leaving the phone connected to the charger (when the phone is completely charged) while you are using it may lower battery life if you do it repeatedly.

You can carry out similar actions on an (Apple) iPhone.

How to activate an iPhone's emergency SOS

If you have an iPhone 8 or later, you need to hold the power button and one of the volume keys down at the same time.

You should see 'Emergency SOS' pop up on the screen and it will begin to countdown for a few seconds before ringing the emergency services.

Make sure you keep hold of both buttons.

If you've set up a list of emergency contacts it will send them your location after your call with the emergency services disconnects.

If you have an iPhone 7 or later you'll need to press the power button five times fast and then slide your finger across the 'Emergency SOS' button that appears on the screen.

If you don't slide the button then an alarm will start sounding.
