One change could really improve your AirPods' battery too

AIRPOD owners could soon be in for a big free upgrade that allows them to take photos and more with their iPhone.

Camera controls are reportedly being prepared for the upcoming iOS update.

All users will have to do is tap the stem of an AirPod earpiece to trigger the camera, according to .

This could come in particularly handy when trying to take selfies or big group shots.

But that's not the only trick Apple apparently has up its sleeve.

It's rumoured that there will be new sleep detection coming too.

This will turn your AirPods off when the device detects that you've nodded off with them in.

That means no more sleep timers - and no waking up with all the battery drained.

However, it's not clear whether this will work on the AirPods and iPhone, or require an Apple Watch which has built in sleep detecting tech.

Elsewhere, new head gestures could be landing as well.

AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods 4 owners can already nod their head to accept a call or shake from side to side to decline it.

They can do the same with notifications too.

But Apple is rumoured to be planning even more, including an extension to the volume adjustment made with Conversation Awareness, which automatically lowers your audio while you’re talking. 

And there might be a new mic mode to deliver "studio quality" for those listening to you.

The wait for official word from Apple may not be far off either.

Next week the tech giant hosts its annual WWDC conference where it announces all things software and beyond.

It may be the first glimpse we get of the firm's refreshed iOS update coming to iPhones later this year, which is rumoured to carry a new name.

Reports suggest Apple may be preparing to drop the current numerical structure and align it to the year instead.
