TIME TO DIE-PHONE

Apple’s iOS 11 operating system is set to make the iPhone 5 obsolete, hitting MILLIONS of users

New version of the software that powers tech firm's mobile devices will not work on certain gadgets - meaning they can no longer be updated

APPLE fans are bracing themselves for the demise of their much-loved gadgets.

The tech firm will roll out iOS 11, a new operating system for iPhone and iPad, later this year.

It will only work on devices with processors which run in 64 bits, meaning it will not be compatible with the iPhone 5 or previous gadgets, which featured 32 bit processors.

The iPhone 5 was wildly popular and sold millions of units, meaning the change to 64 bit could render a lot of people's gadgets obsolete.

While the devices will still work when iOS 11 comes out, they will not be able to run the latest apps and will not get security updates to make the phone hacker-proof.

It was previously claimed that 200,000 apps will also be made redundant in the switchover to iOS 11.

Apple first began stoking the app bonfire in February 2015, when it told developers that all new apps had to be written in 64-bit code.

It is actually rather easy to convert a 32-bit app into one which will work properly on modern phones.

So if your favourite app stops working when iOS 11 is released, you should probably blame the person who built it, rather than Apple.
