Sonos and Ikea team up for secret audio project that could save you cash
The king of multi-room partners with the king of flat-packs to expand the Swedish retailer's smart home offering.

IKEA might be somewhere you'd go for flat-pack furniture rather than gadgets, but a new partnership with speaker brand Sonos will see the Swedish retailer expanding its smart home platform into audio.
After the successful launch of its Trådfri smart lighting range, Ikea has said it is collaborating with Sonos to make it easier for people to “play any song, anywhere in the home”.
With Sonos’ multi-room know-how, it’s a smart pairing. And though there has been no mention of exactly what the product will be, Sonos has acknowledged Ikea’s understanding of lifestyle and home design is equally key to the project.
“There is some tremendous synergy to be found here [between design and audio],” Sonos’ PR & Culture manager, Shakira Payne, told The Sun.
“As we dive headlong into this new phase of the sonic internet, I think it’s a super exciting project.”
As a premium brand in the wireless speaker market, it will be particularly interesting to see how Sonos works with Ikea, notorious for its affordable pricing.
Its Trådfri smart lighting caused a fuss earlier this year, by undercutting popular competition like Philips Hue. It remains to be seen if this pairing does the same.
We’ll have some time to wait and find out though. The results of the collaboration won’t launch in store until 2019.
