Snapchat celebrates Star Wars Day with 3D Chewbacca lens and selfie mask

SNAPCHAT is channelling the force with a bunch of limited edition Star Wars Day features including a 3D Chewbacca teaching you to speak Wookie.
There's also filters, stickers, and Snap Map tricks celebrating the blockbuster series of films, which are honoured by fans every year on May 4.
The highlight is a Lens (a graphic that's overlaid on the environment around you using your phone's rear camera) that shows Chewbacca teaching your Snapchat Bitmoji avatar (a cartoon version of you) Wookie.
That, in case you're wondering, is the hairy hero's native language, spoken on his home planet of Kashyyk in the Star Wars universe and also known as Shyriiwook.
A real-life language lesson would come in handy for those planning to see Solo: A Star Wars Story (the upcoming spinoff that charts the adventures of a younger Han and his lovable copilot) when it hits cinemas on 25 May.
What is Star Wars Day?
Here's why everyone suddenly has Star Wars fever...
- Star Wars day is held on May 4 every year for all lovers of the Skywalkers, the Resistance and Yoda’s wise words.
- It celebrates the Star Wars franchise films that were created by George Lucas and have become hugely popular among millions worldwide.
- The event was not created by George Lucas or his company Lucasfilm, but is observed by fans around the globe.
- "May the Fourth be with you” is said to have first been coined in a newspaper advertisement by the Conservative party, on May 4, 1979.
- The advert commemorated the day Margaret Thatcher took up office as the UK Prime Minister.
- The Walt Disney Company, which bought the rights to Star Wars and Lucasfilm in 2012, now hosts celebrations in its Disneyland and Walt Disney World theme parks.
- The hashtag #MayTheFourthBeWithYou is used on Instagram and Twitter around the world.
For Snapchatters who prefer the app's quirky selfie masks, there's a Chewbacca Lens you can wear that mimics your facial movements.
Elsewhere, there are tons of Bitmoji stickers – starring a Jedi version of your cartoon self complete with a lightsaber – that can be added to your Snaps or sent to mates via Chat.
And a similar "May the 4th be With You" Bitmoji filter.
Rounding up the line-up is an Actionmoji for Snap Maps. With it, you'll appear as a lightsaber-wielding Jedi on the app's GPS-enabled maps feature.
