WHEN Call of Duty announced Black Ops IV was going to get a battle royale mode, analysts were dismissive of the threat the world's biggest entertainment brand posed to Epic Game's massively popular Fortnite.

They might want to rethink that as the feedback starts to roll in for Blackout now gamers are finally getting their hands on it.

The beta test for the battle royale mode is underway on PS4, with Xbox One and PC players set to join the fray in the coming days.

Its winning praise for everything from wingsuits to monkey bombs, the tactical nature of the gameplay and the variety that the game's vehicles bring to the party.

The wingsuits mean players are finding they can drop in wherever on the map they feel like. There are some initial complaints about distribution of initial loot and how clearly you can spot what you need, but one imagines that is the sort of kink the beta should iron out.

In fact, developer Treyarch is also reacting to feedback and making changes.

"We've seen several comments suggesting that the item pickup time is slower than expected," Treyarch said in a post to the game's forum on Reddit.

"We'll be updating the game to make pickup speeds as fast as possible without interfering with reloading, and make it easier to pick up items without looking directly at them."

The AI-controlled zombies are also getting their fair share of good press, with items from Black Ops' previous zombie modes attracting them and providing an extra level of complication for those trying to hide rather than fight.

The grappling hook -- coincidentally implemented this week in Fortnite's High Stakes update -- lends itself to fighting on and in some of the taller structures scattered around the map.

Another thing players are enjoying is the instant familiarity with many of the locations.

The map is essentially a greatest-hits compilation of Call of Duty maps -- so if you're a hardcore CoD fan, you're likely to feel right at home very quickly indeed.

Many players are, unsurprisingly, comparing Blackout to PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds more than they are Fortnite, with the former game having more of a traditional military shooter feel as opposed to Fortnite's colourful and cartoony aesthetic.

The launch of the beta coincided with PUBG recording its first day in just over a year with fewer than a million concurrent players.
