iPhone XS camera is ‘SECOND best in the world’ – can you guess which phone came top?

There's no denying Apple's camera prowess, but one phone maker has pulled ahead in the race for picture perfection

THE NEW iPhone XS has "one of the best mobile cameras" in the world, according to new test results.

But although the handset received high praise, another phone model beat Apple's flagship blower to the top spot.

When it comes to smartphone camera testing, DxOMark is one of the best in the business.

The camera software firm tries out all the top mobiles to find out which models have the best photography chops.

For its iPhone XS Max camera , Apple's pricey handset earned a very high 105 score.

That beats Samsung's Galaxy Note 9 (103), the Google Pixel 2 (98), and last year's iPhone X (97).

So which phone came first?

The victor is the Huawei P20 Pro, which was given an unbeaten score of 109.

Chinese phone firm Huawei released the P20 Pro back in late March, to critical acclaim.

The handset was widely praised for its very impressive rear-facing camera – which was comprised of three separate lenses.

It combined a 40-megapixel RGB camera, a 20-megapixel monocrhome camera, and an 8-megapixel telephoto camera, which worked together to create stunning shots.

What made it more exciting was that it launched with a lowly £799 price tag.

That's cheaper than the £849 Samsung Galaxy Note 9, and far less than Apple's £999 to £1,449 iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max.

But the Huawei P20 Pro's DxOMark success doesn't make the iPhone XS's shooter any less impressive.

The company said that the new iPhone XS offers "very good target exposure, and a wide dynamic range in all conditions".

DxOMark also said that the phone produced "excellent" snaps, which isn't massively surprising.

After all, Apple completely overhauled the way its iPhone takes photos for the new model.

Your iPhone now starts taking photos as soon as the camera app is opened, so that there's no delay when you hit the shutter button.

And when you take a photo, the iPhone XS actually captures multiple frames at once.

All of these frames are exposed at different levels, and then your camera takes the best of these frames and blends them into one really great image.

It's an easy way to improve photos taken in difficult lighting conditions, particularly when there are dark and light areas in a single shot.

We should also point out that DxOMark results aren't the be-all-and-end-all of phone testing. All camera trials should be taken with a pinch of salt.
