FACEBOOK'S virtual reality gaming headset just got a huge upgrade.

The Oculus Rift S and its controllers can track the way you move with new cameras mounted on the outside of the headset -- and they also let you see the world around you without taking the headset off.

Those cameras not only mean you don't need external sensors to detect your movement, but also mean you can define a "play space" for VR so that the system knows where your walls and furniture are, and so keeps you in bounds.

Using the cameras to see the space around you with the headset on, you can draw the boundaries in the virtual world and ensure you don't end up knocking any real-world lamps over as a you cast spells, decapitate orcs, or whatever else you might be doing in the VR world.

It's got "next generation" lenses, as well as better displays behind them meaning you should get to see a better-quality image than ever before.

Oculus also promises that the image will be clearer and sharper than ever before too.

The Roomscale VR system should make playing games in VR much easier for those without a huge space to dedicate to it

The headset itself looks more secure thanks to a redesign done with help from Lenovo.

It's supposedly more comfy, has better weight distribution, improved light blocking and the ability to plug in your own headphones.

One other significant upgrade is that it now only has one cable running to it, so you don't need to deal with a jumble of wires every time you want to dive into a VR world.

It's going to be out later this Spring, though we're not sure exactly when.

It's going to cost $399 in the US, which is exactly the same price as the original main Oculus Rift -- so expect it to sell for £349 here when it arrives.

Don't forget that you still need a decent gaming PC to plug it into, of course -- something like the HP Omen Obelisk or better, really.

If you want something standalone, then you'll want the previously announced Oculus Quest, which is also due out this spring.

That is much less powerful, but is a completely wireless standalone unit.
