SPEED OF FLIGHT

Eco-friendly plane concept could fly you to New York in THREE hours

The zero-emissions aircraft could be in production within the next 10 years, according to its designer.

A new aircraft concept aiming to revolutionise long haul travel, could cut the flight time from London to New York in half… and produce ZERO carbon emissions in the process.

The spaceship-like aircraft, designed by Oscar Vinals from Barcelona, Spain, would be able to reach a top speed of Mach 1.5 – around 1,150mph – and would be powered by electricity at no cost to the environment.

The aircraft, named ‘Magnavem’ meaning ‘big bird’ by its creator, would receive its power from a compact fusion reactor, using a process similar to the one that keeps the sun burning.

It would also feature a CO2 cleaning system to add to its environmental friendliness, and due to its advanced internal technology, could be charged very quickly at its destination.

Having worked on the plans for over a year, 40-year-old Mr Vinals believes his plane could carry around 500 passengers, and once certain technologies are more widely available, could be ready for manufacture in 10 to 15 years.

“The response has been totally positive. I am very happy with this,” he said.

“I am most excited about the possibility to use a CFR (compact fusion reactor) with the benefits of inexhaustible power and great amounts of energy production.”

He added: “We must not forget the possibility of using the plane like an efficient tool to ‘clean’ the excess of CO2 in the atmosphere.”
