RESIDENTS of Nottingham might not know it, but 26ft beneath them is a hidden drinking den serving cocktails to those lucky enough to find it.

More than 800 caves and tunnels exist beneath the city - the largest network in the country - and one of them has been converted into a cosy drinking den, concealed from the rest of the city.

The grotto, known as , can be difficult to discover, with a series of clues leading the way to its front door.

At the end of the trail is a handle adorned with a large golden skull, which leads down to the hidden tavern.

Once in the bar, guests can settle into the atmosphere amid the tranquil lighting, the chandeliers and skull decorations with a fine array of cocktails and other drinks.

Lost Caves specialises in gin, with close to 30 different types behind the bar for enthusiasts to work their way through.

wrote: "The bar boasts an array of craft beers, fine wines, and a cocktail menu that features both classics and inventive concoctions.

"Despite all these temptations, the bar’s true speciality is gin and it has an impressive 28 different varieties to choose from."

The original use of the cave isn't exactly clear, however suggest that it could have been alcohol-related.

They wrote: "When, why, and by whom these deep grottoes were excavated is unknown, however, they do appear to have been adapted for the purpose of storing and brewing ale on rock-cut ledges.

"Instead of holding barrels of beer, these rock ledges now make a cosy cushion-strewn perch upon which gin and cocktail aficionados can sample the bar’s latest below-ground beverage creations."

The bar sits beneath the Mercure Hotel, formerly the George Hotel, which has been in place in the centre of Nottingham for more than 200 years and is believed to be the oldest hotel in the city.

The boasts that the bar has "wow" factor for anyone looking for a unique place for a drink.

It reads: "Situated below the streets of Nottingham, we have transformed one of the original caves into a curious and wonderful space.

"With bench seating, chandeliers and fur throws; the cosy and one of a kind space is truly a sight to behold and perfect for you next meeting or event that needs that 'WOW' factor!"

One of the few lucky enough to stumble upon the bar was Tiktok user Fizz (), who shared footage of their visit online.

In , they showed the descent into the bar, as well as some of its cosy seating arrangements.

They wrote: "Found this beautiful hidden Rum & Gin bar I'm Nottingham. Such an amazing vibe!"

Lost Caves isn't the only bar in the city with underground elements to it, with Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem an 800-year-old pub built into the rocks on top of which Nottingham Castle stands.

The pub is one of several in the UK that claim to be the oldest in the country.
