Travel update 24/05/16
Following travel advice from the Foreign & Commonwealth Office, there is currently travel disruption affecting travellers flying between the UK and Egypt. The FCO are currently advising against travel in some areas of Egypt. The main tourist areas are not affected. The Sun Travel recommends tourists to check the Foreign and Commonwealth Office before travelling.
Introducing Hurghada
Transformed from a sleepy village into a vibrant holiday destination, Hurghada is the perfect place to work on your tan. But it’s also a go to for diving the spectacular Red Sea reefs, camel riding into the sunset or scouring the bazaars for a budget Louis Vuitton. With fantastic weather throughout the year, a warm sea, and hundreds of bars and restaurants crammed on the winding coastline, a holiday to Hurghada is the ultimate Egyptian adventure.
Getting Around Hurghada
It’s possible to walk quite happily around Hurghada, as long as you stop for cool drinks at regular intervals!
If your feet get tired, there are other options for getting around. While Hurghada has no public transport as such, it does have fleets of ‘microbuses’ that are popular with locals. These are white Toyota vans that travel along set routes throughout the city, and travel is cheap, with rides costing 1-3 Egyptian pounds, and drivers will stop at your desired destination along the route – just let them know where you want to go at the start of your journey.
An alternative option is to take a taxi. Some taxi drivers in Hurghada do overcharge tourists so it’s best to agree a total price for the trip (this will usually be between 10-30 Egyptian pounds) before you get in and avoid paying with large 50 or 100 pound notes. Not all drivers will speak English so you may have to point to where you want to go on a map. There aren’t many street names in Hurghada so giving landmarks instead is a better bet.
Car hire is an option, with many of the large car hire companies represented in Hurghada but driving in Egypt can be challenging!
