Why has Disney Channel shut down?

DISNEY announced that it has closed down Disney Channel, DisneyXD and Disney Junior.

The channel closures are likely to drive more to subscribe to Disney's streaming platform, Disney+.

Why did Disney Channel shut down?

It's been claimed that Disney were unable to reach a new deal with Sky and Virgin Media due to dwindling channel engagement.

A spokesperson said: "Walt Disney Company remains committed to our kids channels business."

They explained the plan is to "execute distribution agreements for Disney channels in many markets where Disney+ is also available".

UK trade Broadcast first reported this.

When did Disney Channel shut down in the UK?

Disney Channel, DisneyXD and Disney Junior have now been shut down - the channels were closed in late September.

The spokesperson announced: "From October 1st, Disney+ will become the exclusive home for content from Disney Channel, DisneyXD and Disney Junior in the UK."

Disney's non-kids channels, including National Geographic and Fox are continuing to exist on regular TV.

How much does a Disney+ subscription cost?

Disney+ launched on March 24, 2020, though some territories had the platform from November 2019.

In April 2020 it was announced that Disney+ had amassed over 50million subscribers.

There are two subscription options: Disney lovers can pay £5.99 a month with no commitments, or they can pay £59.99 for a year which saves just over 15 per cent. You .

It used to be possible to get a seven-day free trial of the streaming service, but Disney scrapped this too.

Enders Analysis said: "It is unsurprising that Sky and Virgin have felt able to walk away from negotiations to carry the Disney kids’ channels - they have performed terribly over the past few years.

"In 2010 those aged four to 15 watched 11.5 minutes of Disney kids’ channels per day, it is now 1.3 minutes."
