A TV insider said: “This role is one of the most anticipated castings on The Crown.

“The final series covers the Prime Minister’s epic clash with the Queen over her response to the death of Diana in 1997.

“So the creators wanted an adaptable actor like Andrew who has proved he can master the charm and intimidating presence that typified Blair.”

Dublin-born Andrew made his breakthrough as baddie Moriarty in Sherlock and played a Bond villain in 2015’s Spectre.

He became a household name as The Priest — led into temptation by Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s Fleabag in the BBC comedy — and has starred in Black Mirror.

Andrew’s agent says he is “unavailable” for the current filming dates so he would have to shuffle his schedules to make The Crown role work.

Last year Dominic West, 51, faced a similar scheduling hurdle when offered the role of Prince Charles.

Now he is set to take over from Josh O’Connor, 30 when work on series five begins in June.
