GOOD Morning Britain's Ranvir Singh fought back tears over her son's struggle as co-host Ed Balls opened up about his stammer today.

The 44-year-old star is mum to nine-year-old Tushaan, and asked the former MP for tips on how best to support him.

It was Susanna Reid who kicked off the emotional chat this morning, praising "inspiring" Ed for overcoming his stammer to present the breakfast show.

He explained: "I didn't find out it was a stammer until I was already in the cabinet. I couldn't do autocue, or read a speech - I had to do everything off the cuff.

"They said to me, 'Until you are public about it, it'll never get better' and I didn't do that until 2009, it takes the pressure away but sometimes it still goes wrong."

Ed went on: "The idea I can be on GMB looking at a screen, reading autocue, getting through a morning like this - 12 years ago I would be in meltdown, today I love it."

As Susanna acknowledged he was doing a "terrific job", Ed continued to provide hope to others with a stammer, reeling off famous names who have also struggled including Ed Sheeran, Gareth Gates, and King George.

He went on: "It's not going to go away on its own, it's part of who you are, take it or leave it. Have a go, it's amazing what you can do.

"I stammer all the time on this show and most people don't notice, you ride through it - there are so many people who push these things underneath and the truth is that being open and owning it, that's what you need to do."

Ranvir then interjected, her voice cracking as she shared: "I'll be playing this bit back to my son. I'm going to go back and find it on the hub and play what you said to him, I think it's brilliant. Really, thank you so much."

When Susanna asked if her son suffered with a stammer, Ranvir explained: "He doesn't like speaking out loud at all, reading and speaking out loud… That makes me feel quite emotional.

"I'm really pleased, thank you for talking about that."

Asking for guidance, she then asked: "Is it unhelpful for a parent to just say, 'Take a breath and start again'? I'm trying to be helpful, but is that wrong?"

Ed replied: "You just have to wait and say, 'It's fine, take your time'. Any time you put pressure on, that makes it harder and tightens them up so it's just about calm and being yourself."

Ranvir was visibly emotional as she quipped: "It's like a therapy session with Ed Balls!" before adding: "Thank you, I appreciate that."

The TV presenter shares Tushaan with ex-husband Ranjeet Singh Dehal, who she split from in 2019.
