Kate Garraway and her family have fun at Winter Wonderland after her husband Derek Draper’s two-year Covid hell

KATE Garraway beamed with happiness as she let her hair down on a fun day trip to Winter Wonderland with her children.

She has been juggling caring for Derek alongside her TV and radio jobs, but enjoyed a rare care-free moment with her kids Darcey, 15, and 12-year-old Billy.

They were seen playing games and riding the carousel as they made the most of their Christmas break.

Proud mum Kate took pictures of Darcey and Billy letting loose on the rides after praising their strength throughout the family tragedy.

She said it was "the biggest gift" she could have received having Derek home for Christmas for the first time since he fell ill.

The family-of-four were even able to enjoy a night out at the panto with wheelchair-bound Derek.

It was the first time the 54-year-old had been seen outside since returning home after a brutal 13-month stay in hospital.

Kate was made an MBE in the New Year Honours after documenting Derek's fight with coronavirus, which has gripped the nation.

The 54-year-old has been recognised for her services to broadcasting, journalism and charity.

It follows her incredible National Television Awards win in September 2021 where she won the authored documentary prize for her hard-hitting documentary Finding Derek.

The programme charted her family's struggle to get her husband home from hospital after he became seriously ill with Covid-19 in March 2020.

Though Derek, a former political adviser, is now free of the virus, he has sustained long-lasting damage to his organs and his recovery is ongoing.

He suffered a "scare" over Christmas, which almost landed him back in hospital.

But Kate admitted "everything felt suddenly perfect" as the family ended Christmas Day watching a festive film together at home.

Sharing a rare snap of her husband with their kids by his side, Kate said she was feeling "grateful" for family time after Derek suffered a "scare" on Christmas Eve.

"So the last 24 hours has been bumpy - a scare that meant Derek might have had to go back into hospital (thankfully sorted by a visit from nurse/carer)," she told fans on Instagram.

"He has also had one of his ultra fatigue days so has been too weak to do much other than sleep.

"I burnt the parsnips ( Darceys favourite ) & got the “wrong” Lego for Billy.

"But now snuggled up around Dad’s bed watching #nativity everything feels suddenly perfect.
