The development could throw the filming schedules of multiple shows into chaos, including The Crown.

The Netflix drama has already had to grind to a halt temporarily due to the death of The Queen last week.

Strictly Come Dancing will not be affected, because it is made in a section of the studios which is not affected by the scare.

However filming has stopped elsewhere while checks are made.

An Elstree Film Studios spokesperson said: “As a pre-cautionary measure, we are arranging asbestos checks in some areas of Elstree Film Studios to ensure they meet health and safety standards.

“Our operations will resume as soon as investigations and any remedial work required are complete.”

Producers of The Crown say they will continue as normal until Elstree inform them what precautions must be taken.

A spokeswoman for Netflix said: “The Crown is not filming on affected areas and production continues as planned. We await further information from Elstree with regards to any remedial work required”.

The Crown has been fortunate that it is currently filming outside of London and abroad, but would have returned to Elstree over the coming weeks.
