The Lily Savage and Radio 2 star's death was announced this morning by his husband Andre Portasio, whom he married in 2017.
Paul posed with miniature dachshund Frankie in Edinburgh just three days ago.
He was on tour with a stage production of the musical Annie at the Edinburgh Playhouse.
The pic, posted on an Instagram account dedicated to the pooch, may be one of the final snaps of Paul before his death.

As part of their tributes, ITV will be reshowing the episode of O'Grady's hit show For the Love of Dogs, featuring the Queen Consort at 5pm.
Paul shared his home in Kent with pigs, chickens, sheep, goats, three pregnant alpacas and his five dogs Nancy, Arfur, Conchita, Eddie and Soz.
The star previously adopted several rescue dogs including Shih Tzu and Bichon Frise crossbreed Buster, who died in 2009 after Paul dedicated the second volume of his autobiography to him.
Paul called Buster, who gained a huge following on social media, the "greatest canine star since Lassie".
Battersea Dogs and Cats Home paid tribute to O'Grady as a "devoted animal lover and a champion for the underdog".
It comes after the Queen Consort Camilla was "deeply saddened" by the death of national treasure Paul - saying that his "warm heart and infectious humour lit up the lives of so many".
The Queen Consort had a special bond with Paul O'Grady and worked closely with him in support of Battersea Dogs & Cats Home.
She will be sharing her sympathies with Paul's family privately in due course, the Palace said.

The TV host and comic passed away aged 67 "unexpectedly but peacefully” on Tuesday, according to his husband of six years Andre.
