TOP Gear's sudden axe after Freddie Flintoff's crash has left fans devastated - but there could be good news to come.
Insiders of the long-running BBC show insist it will make a dramatic return to TV screens in just two years' time.
The BBC announced yesterday they were planning a new project with the Top Gear star.
They say "resting" the show for now is "the right thing to do" - but claim the show has not been cancelled for good.
It comes after former England cricket captain Freddie, 45, was seriously injured in a horror 124mph crash while filming last December.
“Top Gear will return and it could be as soon as a couple of years", a source told the .
"Everyone involved knows the loyal fans will be dismayed.
"But it’s only temporary.”
Filming for the show Flintoff co-presents with Paddy McGuinness and automotive journalist Chris Harris was halted after the crash 11 months ago.
Following the accident, the BBC announced that continuing filming would be “inappropriate”, adding there would be a health and safety review.

Flintoff reached a settlement with the BBC, said to be worth £9m.
The brave star's facial injuries were visible while he helped out the England cricket team in training this summer.
In a statement yesterday, the BBC said: “Given the exceptional circumstances, the BBC has decided to rest the UK show for the foreseeable future.
"We know that resting the show will be disappointing news for fans, but it is the right thing to do.”
